Fire Razes Sokoto Old Market, Destroys Goods Worth Millions of Naira

Fire razes Sokoto old market

A fire outbreak at the Sokoto old market on Friday night, has reportedly led to the loss of goods worth millions of Naira.

Dozens of shops stocked with such items as assorted food stuff, cooking oil, detergents and other household items were destroyed by the fire.

The Sokoto old market was similarly affected by a fire outbreak in July 2016 when the textile section of the market was completely razed before fire fighters could put out the inferno.

Head of operations at the Sokoto State Fire Service, Mr Mustapha Mohammed, on Saturday, confirmed the latest fire outbreak at the Sokoto old market. He said ”the inferno started at around 9pm yesterday.”

But we were able to put it out in about two and half hours, with the assistance of the affected traders and other Samaritans.

There was no loss of life. A fireman suffered a dislocation in his right leg but he is responding to treatment.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but, there was no public power supply when the inferno started.”

Mohammed however stated that the department would conduct thorough investigations to unravel the cause of the fire.

Mohammad Chika, one of the affected traders, called for assistance to enable the traders recoup their losses.

We are appealing for an urgent support from the state and Federal Government, as well as other well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.

Former Sokoto state governor, Attahiru Bafarawa donated relief items and the sum of N30 million to traders affected by the 2016 fire outbreak.

The money was at the time shared to the traders by an aide of the former governor, Ibrahim Milgoma, who represented the government.

According to Premium Times, reconstruction work is still on-going at the site of the 2016 incident.
